Sete Cidades hike: the complete guide to São Miguel’s iconic crater

View of the Sete Cidades crater on São Miguel, with the green and blue lakes and volcanic landscape

In brief

  • Location: Sete Cidades caldera, western São Miguel, 35 minutes from Ponta Delgada.
  • Full loop: 12 to 14 km, 4 to 5 hours, total elevation gain around 400 m.
  • Short option: Vista do Rei → Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, 7 km, 2h30.
  • Best time: early morning (before 9 am) to avoid clouds.
  • Highlights: Vista do Rei, Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde.

Sete Cidades is the image you inevitably bring back from a trip to São Miguel: two adjacent lakes, one emerald green and the other cobalt blue, cradled in a five-kilometre-wide volcanic crater. The local legend tells of the impossible love between a green-eyed princess and a blue-eyed shepherd whose tears gave birth to the two lagoons. Geology paints a more prosaic picture — differences in depth and sunlight — but the beauty is undeniable.

The hike around the crater is, without question, one of the most beautiful in the Azores. It is not technically demanding but demands patience with the weather: clouds can swallow the caldera in ten minutes and reveal it just as abruptly. This guide gives you the variants, essential viewpoints and tips for a successful day.

The full loop: 12 to 14 kilometres

The complete version walks the rim of the crater. The usual starting point is Miradouro da Vista do Rei, a drive-in car park with the most photographed viewpoint on the island. From there the trail follows the south-western rim towards Boca do Inferno, drops down to Lomba do Vasco and climbs back on the northern side, passing Miradouro da Cumeeira, Pico do Canário and descending to the village of Sete Cidades at the heart of the caldera.

Count 4 to 5 hours walking at a comfortable pace with photo pauses. Cumulative elevation reaches 400 metres, spread across gentle ascents and descents. No technical or exposed sections, but some muddy stretches after rain.

The loop ends in the village where you can lunch at one of the simple tascas (traditional set menu from €12 including soup, main, dessert and house wine). From there a driver or taxi takes you back to Vista do Rei — arrange this in advance.

The short option: Vista do Rei → Boca do Inferno

If you only have a half-day or if the weather is shaky, the Vista do Rei → Miradouro da Boca do Inferno section packs the finest panoramas. Roughly 7-kilometre round trip in 2h30, almost flat, very accessible. The ideal option for families with children, time-pressed travellers or those recovering from a more demanding hike.

Miradouro da Boca do Inferno offers THE signature shot of Sete Cidades: both lakes in view, the village of Sete Cidades nestled in the caldera, the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. With luck and patience, the raking light of a clear morning turns the scene unforgettable.

Other viewpoints not to miss

Several belvederes dot the crater and can be reached by car if the full hike does not tempt you. Miradouro do Cerrado das Freiras, on the north side, gives a wider angle including Lake Santiago behind. Miradouro da Lagoa do Canário, hidden in the woods, offers a more intimate setting. And definitely visit Miradouro da Grota do Inferno, reached by a short walk from its parking.

A lesser-known but striking detour: the abandoned Monte Palace Hotel, whose ruined terrace gives a melancholy offbeat perspective on the caldera. A contested site — visit with respect and do not enter the building.

What time, what weather?

Sete Cidades plays hide-and-seek with the clouds. The golden rule: be on the ridge before 9 am. Ocean mists usually have not climbed yet and the light is perfect for photography. After noon, the probability that the lakes are buried under a sea of clouds rises sharply.

If you arrive and it is socked in, do not leave immediately. Conditions shift quickly. Wait 30 to 45 minutes and observe. Many travellers give up too soon and miss a clearing that comes right after.

Check the IPMA app (Portuguese meteorological service) the day before and the same morning. It is far more accurate than international forecasts for Azorean microclimates.

What to pack

Waterproof hiking shoes, windproof jacket, long trousers (nettles and brambles line the trail in places), cap, sunscreen, 1.5 litres of water per person, snacks. Trekking poles are handy but not essential. Do not rely on phone coverage on some sections.

From Ponta Delgada, leave at 7.30-8 am. The drive takes about 35 minutes. Free parking at Vista do Rei, large but fills fast in season.

Where to eat and how to extend the day

The village of Sete Cidades has several modest but authentic options. After lunch, a detour to the Monte Palace Viewpoint or the fishing village of Mosteiros on the west coast — to see sunset over the basalt islets — makes the perfect closing to the day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sete Cidades suitable for children?

The short Vista do Rei-Boca do Inferno option, yes, from 7-8 years old with walking-able children. The full 14 km loop is demanding for young travellers.

Do I need a guide for Sete Cidades?

No, the trail is well-marked (official PR3 blazes). A guide remains valuable if you want geological or botanical context, or if you are after lesser-known spots.

Can you swim in the Sete Cidades lakes?

Swimming in Lagoa Azul is technically possible, but shore access is limited and the water is cold. Most travellers enjoy the views from above.

How long does Sete Cidades take by car only?

Count 2 to 3 hours to chain the main viewpoints without walking. Enough for a first contact, but you will miss the intimate quality of views from the ridge.
