The Azores rarely top the “family-friendly” destination lists, and that is a mistake: the archipelago ticks almost every box for a successful trip with children. Nature with no specific danger (no snakes, no large predators, drinkable tap water), temperate summer weather, no jet lag from Western Europe, varied activities between contemplation and action, reasonable cost: here is a destination that easily earns its place in family trade-offs.
This guide helps you structure a family trip to the Azores, with the right choices of island, length, activities and logistics depending on the children’s age.
Which island with kids?
São Miguel is by far the best choice for a first time. The largest and most varied island offers a spread of activities that speaks to every age: whale watching, bathing in the hot springs of Furnas and Terra Nostra, visiting the Gorreana tea plantations (children love seeing how tea is picked), mini hike at Sete Cidades, black sand beaches at Ribeira Grande, petting farm in the centre-west.
The island is also the best equipped in family-friendly accommodation (connecting rooms, kids clubs in Furnas resorts, apartments). Medical infrastructure is excellent in Ponta Delgada — reassuring when travelling with young children.
Terceira also suits a shorter stay (3-4 days), thanks to the natural pools of Biscoitos and the caves of Algar do Carvão (impressive for older kids). Faial appeals to seafaring children with its port of Horta. Conversely, Pico, Flores and São Jorge are rougher and more demanding, to consider only with teenagers or well-travelled children.
What age to travel to the Azores?
Before 3: it is possible but the destination is not specifically designed for toddlers. Many flagship activities (whale watching, hikes, hot springs) are not advised or not suitable. Rather go for a “planted base” stay in a nice hotel in Furnas or Ponta Delgada with pool and garden, without pushing exploration.
From 4 to 6: the island works well for curious small walkers. Short walks (Vista do Rei, Mosteiros, botanical gardens) are possible. Hot springs are a huge hit at this age. Some water activities (light snorkelling, boat trips) are accessible.
From 7 onwards: the trip takes on full dimension. Whale watching, full hikes, volcano climb on Pico for the sportiest (from 12), kayaking, sea swimming. Children this age also capture cultural and geological aspects.
Teenagers: the archipelago is perfect for a family with teens. Surfing, diving, canyoning, evening lake outings can enrich the programme.
Must-do activities with family
Whale and dolphin trip from Ponta Delgada, Lajes do Pico or Horta. Cetacean watching is a universally loved highlight. Choose a catamaran (more stable) for children and plan anti-seasickness medication as a preventive dose.
Furnas or Terra Nostra hot springs: the magic of bathing in natural warm water surrounded by tropical jungle fascinates every age. Poça da Dona Beija is better suited to younger children (moderate temperature).
Gorreana tea plantations: free visit, playful, educational. Children see the plants, the harvest, the vintage machines, and leave with a cup of green tea.
Bike rides in Ribeira Grande or on the Grã Canária loop of São Miguel.
Kayaking on Lagoa do Fogo or in Furnas: calm and effort-free experience, kids from 8.
Quinta do Bom Despacho educational farm and animal sanctuary: suited for the youngest.
Mosteiros: oceanfront fishing village, cold natural pools in summer, impressive basalt rocks. Perfect end of day.
Logistics with children
Rental car: essential. Book an air-conditioned car of sufficient size with a car seat (request when booking). Roads are well-maintained but winding; drives take longer than expected.
Accommodation: prefer connecting rooms or apartments with kitchenette (especially useful with young kids). Airbnbs and rural quintas abound. Furnas and Ponta Delgada offer the widest selection.
Food: no particular concern. Children easily find simple dishes (grilled chicken, pasta, pizza) in any restaurant. Local gastronomy (cozido, grilled fish, Azores pineapple) often appeals to curious eaters.
Pace: avoid overloaded programmes. One big activity in the morning, a smaller one in the afternoon, with free time at the end of the day is the winning formula.
Preparation and health
No specific vaccination required. Bring a classic first-aid kit (children’s paracetamol, disinfectant, SPF50+ sunscreen, mild mosquito repellent). Tap water is drinkable everywhere.
The climate is humid: bring light rain gear even in summer. Mornings can be cool at 15-17°C. Sunglasses are essential: the light on green and black landscapes is intense.
For the youngest, all-terrain strollers work better than umbrella strollers: some paths and trails are gravel or dirt.
Family budget
For a family of 4 (2 adults + 2 children) for a 7-day stay: round-trip Paris-Ponta Delgada off-season ~€1,200 to €1,600, accommodation €700 to €1,400, rental car €280, activities €500 to €800, meals €500 to €700. Estimated total: €3,200 to €4,800, or €800 to €1,200 per person.
Frequently asked questions
Are the Azores dangerous for children?
No. The archipelago is very safe, no dangerous animals, solid medical infrastructure, drinkable water. The only attention points are the sea (sometimes strong currents) and crater rims.
What season for a family trip?
June to September for summer, with pleasant temperatures (20-25°C) and good weather chances. Avoid November-February, which are wetter and windier.
Can you rent a stroller on site?
Yes, in specialised rental agencies in Ponta Delgada. Otherwise, bring your own — compact, all-terrain preferred.
Are whale watching trips suitable for kids?
Yes, from 5-6 years old depending on the operator. Prefer a catamaran to a rigid inflatable. Administer anti-seasickness medication 30 minutes before boarding.
